How to make your first crypto swap
What a swap is, what slippage means, why the quote moves between seeing and confirming, and how to make your first trade without surprises.
What a swap is, and why it is not a purchase
A swap means exchanging one cryptocurrency for another directly in your wallet, without going through an exchange. You are not "buying" the new token from someone: the operation happens against a liquidity pool — a reserve of both assets, held by a contract, whose price comes from the ratio between them.
That difference explains almost everything that surprises people on their first swap.
Why the price changes between seeing and confirming
Because the price comes from the pool's ratio, it moves with every operation anyone makes against it. Between the moment a quote appears on your screen and the moment your transaction is processed, other transactions have gone through.
Two practical consequences:
- A quote is an estimate, not a locked price. It is valid at that instant.
- The larger the amount relative to the pool, the larger the effect. A big swap in a small pool moves the price against you. That is called price impact, and it is not a fee — it is a consequence of the mechanics.
Slippage: the number that protects you
Slippage is the tolerance you accept between the estimated price and the executed price. If the price worsens beyond your tolerance, the transaction fails instead of executing — and failing is the protection.
How to think about it:
- Very low tolerance makes transactions fail often in a busy market.
- Very high tolerance allows execution at a much worse price than you saw, and creates room for you to be taken advantage of by anyone watching pending transactions.
- The wallet's default works for most cases. Raising it only makes sense when transactions fail repeatedly and you understand why.
Walkthrough
1. Have a balance in the wallet. If you do not yet, see how to deposit. 2. Tap "Swap" and choose the source and destination tokens. 3. Enter the amount and read the quote: how much you receive, the price impact, the fee. 4. Check before confirming. This is the moment to verify, not afterwards. 5. Confirm. The new token appears in your balance once the network confirms.
On network fees: on BNB Chain and Solana, VKX covers the fee for operations made in the app — the cost exists and is paid by the company's treasury instead of coming out of your balance. On other networks, fees follow the network's standard. The token you swap follows the ERC-20 standard on EVM networks; on Solana the account model differs, which is why the fee experience differs too.
The first swap comes with a bonus
VKX gives a welcome bonus on the first swap: whoever makes one spins a wheel and can receive between US$ 0.10 and US$ 10 in tokens, an amount set by VKX itself and proportional to the value swapped, credited to their own wallet. It is a welcome bonus, not yield and not a promise of return — the amount depends on the draw and the size of the swap.
Common first-swap mistakes
- Swapping the entire native coin balance. On networks where the fee comes out of your balance, you need to keep a reserve to pay for the next operation.
- Picking a token by name. Several contracts share the same symbol. Check the token, not the name.
- Raising tolerance to "make it work". If it failed twice, understand why before loosening the protection.
- Making the first test with a large amount. Start small.
FAQ
Is a swap the same as buying on an exchange? No. An exchange has an order book and a counterparty; a swap runs against a liquidity pool, and the price comes from its ratio.
Why did I receive less than the quote showed? Because the quote reflects the instant it was calculated. Transactions between quote and execution move the price.
My transaction failed. Did I lose the money? No. A failure does not transfer the value. On networks where the fee is yours, the attempt's fee may have been consumed.
Do I need the native coin to swap? On BNB Chain and Solana, the fee is covered by VKX. On other networks, yes.
Can a swap be undone? No. A confirmed on-chain operation is final. The path is a reverse swap, at a new price.

If you do not have a balance yet, start with how to deposit. And before moving meaningful value, it is worth knowing the real loss vectors.
